How to Record a 30-Second Elevator Pitch That Introduces You and Your Business

Why It Matters

When people are looking for local businesses, they aren’t just looking for services — they’re looking for people they can trust. A short, authentic video is one of the best ways to make that personal connection. It doesn’t have to be fancy. In fact, a simple, low-budget video that shows the real you is often more powerful than a highly produced one.

This 30-second elevator pitch is your opportunity to say who you are, what your business does, and why it matters — in your own voice. Here’s how to get it done.

What to Say

Keep your pitch short, simple, and real. Aim to answer these three questions:

  • Who are you? Start with your name and the name of your business.
  • What do you do? Share a quick line about your service or product.
  • Why should people care? Tell them what makes your business different or why you love doing what you do.

Example:

“Hi, I’m Lisa, owner of Sweet Bean Coffee in Middleburg. We serve locally roasted coffee, homemade pastries, and a cozy space to relax. I started this shop to bring the community together one cup at a time — we’d love to welcome you in.”

Video Tips: Keep It Real, Not Perfect

Lighting
Use natural light whenever possible. Face a window during the day or record outside in open shade (not direct sun). Avoid overhead lighting — it creates harsh shadows.

Sound
Find a quiet space where there’s little background noise. If you have a microphone (even earbuds with a mic), use it for clearer audio. Speak clearly and with energy.

Video Quality
Use your phone or webcam — both are totally fine. Clean your camera lens before recording. Make sure the shot is focused and steady.

Framing
Prop your phone up so it’s eye-level. Avoid low angles (nobody wants a chin cam). You can use a stack of books or a simple tripod. Position yourself in the center of the frame, with a little space above your head.

Format
Record in landscape (horizontal) — this fits better for websites and directories. If you’re sharing on social media platforms like Instagram Stories or TikTok, portrait (vertical) might be better — but for most business listings, go horizontal.

Don’t Overthink It

This isn’t a commercial — it’s an introduction. You’re not trying to be perfect. You’re trying to be real. Smile, look into the camera, and talk like you’re chatting with a neighbor.

If you mess up, just take a breath and try again. It’s okay if it takes a few takes to get something you’re happy with.

Final Tips

  • Keep it under 60 seconds (30–45 seconds is ideal)
  • Speak naturally — don’t read from a script if you can help it
  • End with a friendly invitation: “We’d love to meet you!” or “Come check us out!”

Ready to Be Seen?

Once you’ve recorded your video, upload it with your listing on My Small Towns. It’s your way of saying hello to the community — and it might be the thing that makes someone choose you over another business.
